MOSCOW, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it will revoke its consent for the operation of Poland's Consulate General in Kaliningrad starting Aug. 29, a senior Russian diplomat said Saturday.

In an interview with TASS news agency, Alexey Klimov, director of the ministry's consular department, said the decision was formally conveyed to the Polish side on July 11. It was made in response to what Russia views as another unfounded reduction of its diplomatic presence in Poland and Warsaw's withdrawal of consent for Russia's Consulate General in Krakow.

"This is a retaliatory move. We have repeatedly stressed that any unfriendly actions against our country will be met with an appropriate response and consequences," Klimov said.

Klimov added that the closure of the Russian Consulate in Krakow has increased the workload of consular staff at the Russian Embassy in Warsaw and the Consulate General in Gdansk. He noted that Russian consular officers in Poland are effectively fulfilling their duties.
