KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police have destroyed 9,000 kg of narcotics and arrested 100 suspected traffickers in a major anti-drug operation in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, local media Tolonews reported Saturday.

The large quantity of contraband was seized during a series of coordinated routine operations aimed at curbing the drug trade in the region, Tolonews quoted Mullah Ezatullah Haqani, spokesman for the Helmand provincial police office, as saying.

The suspects, detained on charges of drug trafficking, have been transferred to judicial authorities for further investigation and prosecution, the report said.

Helmand has long been a hub of opium cultivation, and Afghan authorities have intensified operations there since last year to curb production, dismantle trafficking networks and enforce the country's strict anti-drug laws.
