KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have launched a major water canal project in the eastern Afghanistan Panjshir province, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and support local livelihoods, Tolonews reported Saturday.

Constructed at 50 million afghani (706,215 U.S. dollars), the new project will provide irrigation to thousands of hectares of farmland, benefiting households, particularly farming communities that rely heavily on seasonal water supply, the report said.

According to the report, the project is expected to create around 1,000 jobs during its construction and operational phases, offering an economic boost in the region.

Local authorities believe the canal will not only improve crop yields but also strengthen food security and economic stability in the area.

Panjshir, a province known for its fertile valleys and traditional farming, has long faced challenges due to inadequate irrigation infrastructure. Seasonal droughts and changing weather patterns have intensified the need for sustainable water management systems.
