JAKARTA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday urged the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen unity and enhance their preparedness to face growing challenges amid global uncertainty.

"Strategic rivalry now shapes investment, technology, and the movement of goods. The global economy is fragmenting, and decisions once mainly driven by economics are increasingly shaped by geopolitics," he said in his video remarks at the 58th ASEAN Day Celebration held in the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta.

"In this environment, ASEAN unity is more vital than ever," stressed Anwar.

He emphasized that ASEAN's ability to speak clearly, coordinate effectively, and protect shared interests will determine its relevance in the years to come.

Anwar highlighted that ASEAN's strength lies in its openness and in the willingness of its members to support one another's development.

"From digitalization to decarbonization, ASEAN must prepare our people for the transition already underway to adapt, advance and thrive. We must keep investing in skills, infrastructure, and institutional capacity," Anwar said.

He added that ASEAN member nations must focus on preparing skilled human resources and pursue growth that is inclusive, sustainable, and broadly shared.

According to him, the ASEAN 2045 vision sets a long-term goal for a resilient, innovative, and people-centred region. However, he noted that its success will depend on immediate actions, such as improving regional connectivity and strengthening food and energy security.

"Malaysia is committed to ASEAN centrality, and that means ensuring that ASEAN remains at the heart of regional dialogue and cooperation, not only in form but in substance. It also means addressing difficult issues constructively," he said.
