KABUL, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A total of 299 Afghan inmates were released from Pakistani prisons and returned to their homeland over the past week, a news release from the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said on Thursday.
According to the news release, the detainees were imprisoned in Pakistan for 20 days to 3 months, and after being released, they returned to Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak border crossing.
As many as 9,951 Afghan nationals who had been imprisoned in Pakistan and Iran have been set free and returned to their homeland over the past 12 months, the ministry said last week.
Over 10,000 Afghan citizens are currently imprisoned abroad, the majority of whom are being held in Iran and Pakistan, according to data released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July. ■
