AMMAN/GAZA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Tuesday stressed the need for joint efforts to open all crossings to allow immediate and sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza to address the "unprecedented" humanitarian catastrophe.
Safadi made the remarks during a phone call with Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, according to a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
The two ministers discussed diplomatic efforts to secure an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, expressing support for ongoing mediation by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States aimed at reaching a prisoner exchange deal.
Safadi stressed that establishing a sovereign Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the only viable path to lasting peace and regional stability.
Lipavsky reaffirmed the Czech Republic's support for the two-state solution.
Also on Tuesday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called for an agreement between Hamas and Israel to facilitate humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip.
In a press statement, the ICRC affirmed its readiness to provide essential medicines and food supplies and to convey family news to hostages held in Gaza.
The ICRC warned that the window of opportunity to save lives in Gaza is narrowing by the day, and urgent action is required now. Civilians in Gaza must be given immediate and sustainable access to food, along with safe drinking water, medical supplies, hygiene kits, and other necessities for survival and a dignified life.
The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip from Israeli attacks has risen to 61,020, with 150,671 others injured since Oct. 7, 2023, and 9,519 people were killed and 38,630 wounded after the ceasefire collapsed on March 18, Gaza-based health authorities said Tuesday. ■
