JAKARTA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia will tighten restrictions and strengthen supervision on imports to safeguard domestic industries and protect consumers, Trade Minister Budi Santoso said on Wednesday.
Santoso said that between January and July this year, authorities uncovered import violations involving commodities worth at least 26.4 billion Indonesian rupiahs (around 1.6 million U.S. dollars). These commodities included household goods, food, supplements, plastics, electronics, and animal products.
The violations ranged from incomplete documentation to the absence of mandatory Indonesian National Standard certificates. Sanctions have been imposed on businesses found to have breached import regulations, he added.
Authorities will step up monitoring to curb the entry of illegal goods, Santoso said, urging businesses to comply with existing trade provisions. ■
