MANILA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Wednesday warned residents in the coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean against "tsunami wave height of less than 1 meter," following a powerful earthquake that had hit Russia.

Based on the revised magnitude calculations and tsunami wave models in the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the institute said that the first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

"It may not be the largest and these waves may continue for hours," the advisory read.

"The concerned public is advised to be on alert for unusual waves. People are also advised to stay away from the beach and not to go to the coast" of several provinces until the cancellation of the advisory, the Philippine Institute said.
