KAMPALA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and 13 others injured after a passenger taxi plunged into a river in Uganda's eastern district of Busia on Tuesday, police said.
According to a police statement, a commuter taxi traveling from Busia District to Tororo plunged into River Malaba at Amunguru bridge after knocking a pedestrian dead.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the vehicle, while traveling at high speed, knocked down and killed a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road," the statement said.
"The driver lost control, veered off the road, struck the bridge, and plunged into River Malaba below the bridge, killing three passengers and injuring 13 others, including the driver," police added.
According to police, victims were rushed to a nearby public health facility for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same facility's mortuary for postmortem examinations.
"We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and yield to pedestrians, particularly in busy areas, to prevent such tragic incidents," police warned. ■
