HANOI, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's capital Hanoi will begin construction of two key urban railway projects in the fourth quarter of 2025 as part of a long-term strategy to expand the public transport network and ease traffic congestion, local media outlet VnExpress reported on Monday.

The Nam Thang Long-Tran Hung Dao route, also known as metro line No. 2, is scheduled to start construction on Oct. 10, while the Van Cao-Hoa Lac route, or metro line No. 5, will break ground on Dec. 19.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the simultaneous launch of the two projects is expected to help ease traffic pressure on major thoroughfares, particularly in inner-city areas and at the western gateway of the capital.

Hanoi currently operates two metro lines: the Cat Linh-Ha Dong line and the Nhon-Hanoi Station line.

Under the government's transport development plan, the city aims to build an additional 14 urban railway lines by 2050.
