South Africa's mid-year population hits 63.1 million in 2025: Stats SA

JOHANNESBURG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's mid-year population is estimated at 63.10 million in 2025, according to the latest Mid-Year Population Estimates report released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Monday.

Black Africans account for the majority, numbering approximately 51.6 million, about 82 percent of the total population. The white population is estimated at 4.5 million, while 5.3 million people identify as colored and 1.6 million as Indian or Asian, according to the population report.

The data also shows a slight gender imbalance, with women comprising 51.1 percent of the population, or around 32.23 million.

Gauteng remains the country's most populous province, home to about 16.1 million people, making up 25.5 percent of the national total, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 12.2 million residents, or 19.4 percent.

Life expectancy at birth in 2025 is projected at 64.0 years for males and 69.6 years for females, according to the report.
