GAZA, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Hospitals in Gaza recorded five new deaths due to starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the over death toll of that kind since October 2023 to 127, including 85 children, Gaza-based health authorities said Saturday in a brief statement.
Meanwhile, Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East Philippe Lazzarini said on social media platform X that, "A manmade hunger can only be addressed by political will."
"Lift the siege, open the gates, guarantee safe movements and dignified access to people in need," Lazzarini said, adding the agency now has the equivalent of 6,000 trucks in Jordan and Egypt waiting for the green light to get into Gaza.
The Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported that at least 47 Palestinians, including 17 aid seekers, were killed by Israeli attacks across Gaza on Saturday.
The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday in a statement that its air force struck over 100 militant targets throughout Gaza over the past day, including "terrorist cells, combat tunnels, military infrastructure, anti-tank missile posts, and weapons storage facilities."
Since Israel resumed its military operations in the enclave on March 18, at least 8,581 Palestinians had been killed and 32,436 others injured, bringing the total death toll since October 2023 to 59,733, and injuries to 144,477, Gaza-based health authorities said Saturday. ■
