KABUL, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Police have arrested 15 drug smugglers during a series of operations in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province over the past weeks, provincial police spokesman Syed Tayeb Hemad said Thursday.
The alleged drug smugglers, according to the official, were involved in drug smuggling and selling opium poppy, heroin and other illicit drugs to people in provincial capital Jalalabad and adjoining districts.
All the detained smugglers are currently in police custody for investigation, the official said.
In the drive against illegal drugs, police destroyed 170 acres of poppy farms in the northern Baghlan province and discovered 25 kg of illicit drugs in the western Nimroz province a couple of days ago. ■
