WELLINGTON, July 22 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's import value of fully electric vehicles (EVs) plunged in the 12 months to June 2025, the statistics department Stats NZ said on Tuesday.
During the year, the value of fully EVs imports into the country fell 57 percent to 395 million NZ dollars compared to the previous year, the agency reported.
This steep drop contributed to a broader contraction in New Zealand's passenger car import market, which totaled 4.9 billion NZ dollars, down 23 percent year-on-year, it said.
Reduced-emission vehicle imports were mixed, with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles down 38 percent to 234 million NZ dollars, while hybrid electric vehicles rose 3.8 percent to 1.6 billion NZ dollars, statistics show.
Reduced-emission vehicles now make up 45 percent of New Zealand's passenger vehicle import value in the 12 months to June 2025, up from 8.2 percent in 2020.
The value of traditional internal combustion vehicle imports to New Zealand fell 20 percent to 4.5 billion NZ dollars, it said. While goods transport vehicles, including trucks, vans, and utes, dropped 17 percent, hybrid models for goods transport surged 177 percent over the same period.
