JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Researchers have discovered two new species of fanged frogs in Indonesia's Meratus mountains, which span the provinces of South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan, according to Taufik Hidayat, head of the Regional Research and Innovation Agency of South Kalimantan.
One of the species, Limnonectes maanyanorum sp. nov, was identified in Central Kalimantan. The other, Limnonectes nusantar sp. nov, was found along the border between Banjar regency and Hulu Sungai Selatan regency in South Kalimantan.
"Researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency and a Japanese university conducted the study in the Meratus mountains. We have received a report confirming the discovery of these two new species of fanged frogs," Hidayat told local media.
He said that the findings underscore the importance of the Meratus mountains as a natural heritage site rich in biodiversity. ■
