TOKYO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks edged down Wednesday as many investors refrained from trading actively ahead of the House of Councillors election on the weekend.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 14.62 points, or 0.04 percent, from Tuesday at 39,663.40.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 5.91 points, or 0.21 percent, lower at 2,819.40.
On the stock market, trading was mostly directionless as recent media polls have shown that the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito could lose its majority in the upcoming upper house election, analysts said. ■
