JAKARTA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government has set an ambitious target to achieve milk self-sufficiency by 2029 and plans to import 1 million dairy cows over the next five years, according to Agung Suganda, director general of animal husbandry and animal health at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Efforts to boost national milk production have been included in the government's list of national strategic projects. As part of this initiative, the government has developed a roadmap for fresh milk supply from 2025 to 2029, Suganda said on Tuesday in Probolinggo, East Java.
"To achieve the 2029 milk self-sufficiency target, we need to ship 1 million dairy cattle from abroad over the next five years," he said.
In addition to cattle imports, the Ministry of Agriculture is promoting higher dairy cattle productivity, including through artificial insemination programs.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman added that the government supports and facilitates dairy cow imports by livestock breeders to enhance the quality of domestic milk production. ■
