TOKYO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower Monday on concern over the tariff policy of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 110.06 points, or 0.28 percent, from Friday at 39,459.62.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 0.43 points, or 0.02 percent, lower at 2,822.81.

Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday, following a broad decline of New York stocks on Friday.

The stock market was also pressured by concerns about the prospects of the global economy as Trump announced Saturday that he plans to impose 30-percent tariffs on imports from the European Union and Mexico from Aug. 1.

In the afternoon session, the continued depreciation of the yen prompted some buybacks in auto-related stocks, leading the Nikkei average to temporarily turn positive. However, persistent concerns over U.S. tariffs on the global economy kept market sentiment cautious, with selling pressure particularly strong in semiconductor-related stocks, analysts said.
