JAKARTA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Car sales in Indonesia fell sharply in the first half of 2025, with both retail and wholesale figures declining by nearly 10 percent due to weakened consumer purchasing power.

According to the latest data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), retail sales reached 390,467 units from January to June, a 9.7 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, wholesale sales, vehicles delivered from manufacturers to dealers, fell by 8.6 percent to 374,740 units, down from 410,020 units in the first half of 2024.

GAIKINDO Chairman Jongkie D. Sugiarto noted that car prices have remained relatively affordable, with many brands offering promotions and significant discounts on new vehicles. However, these incentives have not been enough to boost sales.

"The sluggish performance in new car sales is mainly due to current economic pressures. Despite the attractive pricing, many people are still unable to make purchases because their purchasing power remains low," Sugiarto said in a press release.
