AMMAN, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Jordanian field hospital in northern Gaza has begun distributing 12,000 liters of drinking water daily to over 8,000 residents, in response to a severe water shortage in the strip, the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said on Thursday.
According to a JAF statement, the hospital extended a pipeline in accordance with strict technical and health standards to ensure a steady supply of clean drinking water.
The hospital's commanding officer said that all water distributed undergoes laboratory testing by local authorities in Gaza to verify its safety and potability.
The initiative comes as a deepening fuel crisis has forced the shutdown of 10 water wells in northern Gaza and is threatening the operation of 25 more, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Wednesday. ■
