MOGADISHU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- An al-Shabab suicide bomber blew himself up on Wednesday at a military training academy in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in the latest attack by the militant group, witnesses and police said.
A police officer, who declined to be named, said the suicide bomber was wearing an explosive vest and detonated the device at Mogadishu's Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy, located near the Ministry of Defense.
"There are casualties, which I cannot confirm now, but al-Shabab targeted people, including foreigners, at the facility," the officer said.
Official casualty figures have not yet been released, but the al-Shabab militant group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in a statement.
The group, which has carried out near-daily attacks targeting government officials and civilians, did not disclose the number of casualties. ■
