SYDNEY, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Two people have died and one more has been injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles in a northeast suburb of Melbourne, Australia.
A police statement said that an SUV was traveling northbound in Templestowe, 16 km northeast of central Melbourne, at around 9:25 a.m. on Monday when it veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a hatchback.
Both occupants of the hatchback, who have not yet been formally identified, died at the scene.
The 54-year-old female driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital under police guard.
A second SUV was also struck after the initial head-on collision but the occupants were uninjured.
Major crash investigation unit detectives have commenced an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
It was the sixth fatal traffic collision in the state of Victoria since Friday.
Victoria Police Superintendent Justin Goldsmith said in a statement on Sunday that many of the incidents were a result of a single act of non-compliance or inattention. ■
