SYDNEY, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Three people have died and two more have been injured in a crash between two vehicles north of Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday.

Police in the state of Victoria said that emergency services were called to reports that two vehicles had collided about 45 km north of central Melbourne at 7:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Three occupants of one of the vehicles died at the scene and a fourth occupant was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The sole occupant of the second vehicle was also hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Victoria Police Detective Senior Sergeant Ben Morris said at a press conference that a dead kangaroo was found near the scene and could have caused the collision.

"It appears the vehicle has possibly swerved to avoid the animal," he said.

Detectives from Victoria Police's major collision unit have commenced an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Six people have been killed in traffic incidents in Victoria over the weekend, taking the state's road death toll so far in 2025 to 156 compared to 141 at the same time in 2024.
