HELSINKI, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A man was arrested on Thursday afternoon after several people were stabbed near a shopping center in the southern Finnish city of Tampere, Finnish national broadcaster Yle reported, citing a witness.
Police confirmed in a statement that the incident occurred near the Ratina shopping complex, which is located in the very center of Tampere and adjacent to a major bus terminal.
A suspect was taken into custody, though police did not reveal the individual's gender, according to the statement.
Victims were given first aid on the scene, and police maintained a security cordon while interviewing witnesses. Authorities said the situation no longer poses a threat to the public.
Police were alerted at 4:23 p.m. local time, the statement said.
Traffic in Tampere city center is at a standstill, according to Yle. ■
