PHNOM PENH, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 24 landmine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) casualties in the first half of 2025, down 31 percent from the same period last year, a spokesperson said on Friday.
"Nine persons were killed, 13 injured, and two amputated due to landmine and ERW explosions during the January-June period this year," Lang Kosal, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), told Xinhua.
He added that the victims were 16 men, five boys, two women, and one girl.
According to Kosal, from 1979 to June 2025, landmine and ERW explosions had claimed 19,843 lives and maimed 45,267 others.
Cambodia is one of countries worst affected by landmines and ERWs. An estimated 4 million to 6 million landmines and other munitions had been left over from three decades of war and internal conflicts that ended in 1998.
The Southeast Asian country is committed to clearing all types of landmines and ERWs by 2030. ■
