BAMAKO, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Mali's National Transitional Council (CNT) on Thursday unanimously approved a revision of the country's transition charter, granting a renewable five-year term to the transitional government starting from the promulgation of the new charter.
The draft bill was adopted with 131 votes in favor, none against, and no abstentions, according to official sources.
Key amendments to the charter include the setting of a five-year renewable transition period until national peace and stability are restored, as well as the eligibility of the transitional president, government members, and CNT members to run in future presidential and general elections.
The revised charter also allows for the shortening of the transition period if conditions for holding elections are met. In the event of a conflict between the constitution and the transition charter, the provisions of the constitution shall prevail.
The move followed the transitional government's adoption of the draft bill on June 11, which was based on recommendations from national consultations held on April 28 and 29 in Bamako.
Mali's transition charter has been revised multiple times since its initial adoption in 2020. The most recent revision, in February 2022, extended the transition period by 24 months starting from March 26, 2022. ■
