SINGAPORE, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Nearly nine in ten adults and eight in ten teenagers in Singapore read news, books, and online articles more than once a week, according to the National Reading Habits Study 2024 released on Thursday.
The report, published by the National Library Board, found that almost 80 percent of adults and 90 percent of teens had read at least one book over the past year.
The study, which surveyed 4,623 respondents, revealed that most Singaporeans view reading primarily as a functional activity rather than a leisure pursuit. Over 90 percent of adults said reading helps broaden their worldview and enhance critical thinking.
Physical books remain the most popular format across all age groups. However, digital reading is gaining ground, especially among seniors, who are increasingly turning to eBooks and discovering contents through online platforms.
Bookstores and libraries continue to serve as the primary sources of physical books. Among adults, 54 percent named bookstores as their go-to for purchasing literature, while 62 percent of teenagers said the same. ■
