COLOMBO, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Food Policy and Security Committee has recommended importing 40,000 tons of rice that can be a substitute for Keeri Samba, one of the country's most popular rice varieties, according to a statement from the President's Media Division (PMD) on Thursday.
Of the total, 5,000 tons will be imported by government institutions, while the private sector will bring in the remainder, the statement said.
Proposals were made to import rice, broken rice, or alternative raw materials to support beer and animal feed production, the PMD said.
Discussions also covered fertilizer importation, stock maintenance, supply and distribution. The progress of fertilizer distribution for the ongoing season, and the overall success of cultivation activities were also reviewed, the PMD said. ■
