KABUL, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Counter-narcotic police have destroyed 16,017 acres of hashish crops in east Afghanistan's Paktika province, the provincial police office said on Tuesday.
The operations were launched on the outskirts of Dela and Khushamand districts as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal crop production in the region, said the office, adding that the campaign will persist until the province is free from the drug menace.
Efforts were also underway to introduce alternative crops across the poverty-stricken country.
The Afghan interim government has vowed to fight against illicit crops, drug processing and drug trafficking. ■
