RIGA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Latvian Foreign Ministry on Monday called on all Latvian nationals in Israel to report to the Consular Register amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran.
Since the escalation of the situation in the Middle East region, the Consular Register of the Foreign Ministry has received information on 65 Latvian nationals in Israel and three in Iran. "We encourage everyone to register in the Consular Register," the ministry said in an advisory on its website.
There are currently 6,062 Latvian nationals residing in Israel and three in Iran.
The Foreign Ministry said it was in contact with Latvia's national carrier airBaltic on possible evacuation flights from Israel's neighboring countries.
In a major escalation of regional tensions, Israel launched large-scale airstrikes early Friday, killing several military commanders, scientists, and dozens of civilians. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes later that day, and the exchange of fire continued into Monday. ■
