JERUSALEM, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Several missiles were fired from Iran toward Israel on Tuesday, triggering air raid sirens across multiple areas, including Tel Aviv, the Israeli military said.

"Sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel," the military said in a statement. The attack sent millions of residents in central Israel, along the coastal plain, and in the occupied West Bank scrambling to shelters.

The military said the salvo included several ballistic missiles, most of which were intercepted.

U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries deployed in the region took part in the interceptions, Israeli Channel 12 TV news reported. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service said no injuries had been reported.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military said in a statement that its Air Force carried out a new wave of airstrikes in western Iran.

"As part of the strikes, a number of sites and dozens of surface-to-surface missile launchers were struck," said the statement.

The military added that its Air Force continues to "operate in Iranian airspace in order to locate and neutralize launchers aimed at the Israeli home front."

The deadly aerial conflict between the Islamic Republic and Israel has entered its fifth day, with at least 244 people killed in Iran and 24 in Israel. The escalation was triggered by Israel's surprise airstrikes across Iran on Friday.
