KABUL, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The police have collected around 13 tons of illicit drugs, including heroin and poppy, over the past year and set them on fire, provincial police spokesman Mullah Assadullah Jamshid said Tuesday.
The contraband, which included heroin, opium poppy, hashish, stimulant drug locally known as Tablet K and a variety of objects used in manufacturing, had been collected during a series of operations in a year and was publicly burned recently, Jamshid said.
Without providing more details, the official added that the police won't allow anyone to cultivate, process or traffic the illegal drug in Kandahar province.
The Afghan interim government has banned poppy cultivation and vowed to crack down on illicit drugs and drug smugglers until the war-torn and once-poppy-growing nation becomes free of the drug menace. ■
