KABUL, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The police have discovered more than 270 kg of illegal drugs, including 70 kg of heroin, in western Afghanistan's Herat province, provincial police spokesman Ghulam Nabi Nabizada said Tuesday.
The contraband, which also included 42 kg of opium poppy and 163 kg of methamphetamine, was discovered following intelligence-based operations, the official said, adding a band of smugglers was attempting to take the drug out of the country but failed.
No one has been detained so far, the official said, adding police have been trying to arrest those involved in the illegal business.
In a similar anti-drug drive, the police discovered more than one ton of illegal drugs and arrested 12 alleged drug smugglers in southern Kandahar province 10 days ago. ■
