MEXICO CITY, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Mexico is awaiting a response from the United States on its request to be exempted from a newly imposed 50 percent tariff on steel and aluminum, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Tuesday.

The request was filed Friday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's June 3 executive order that doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all nations except Britain.

Ebrard said that during his visit to Washington last week, Mexico's negotiating team presented key arguments to U.S. officials.

The team argued that the United States currently runs a trade surplus with Mexico in steel, making the tariff "highly questionable."

They also requested treatment equal to that of Britain, warning of potential economic fallout on both sides of the border due to the high level of industrial integration.

"We're waiting for their response," Ebrard said.
