TEHRAN, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Iran has executed nine members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group following their arrest in late January 2018 in the country's western region, the Mizan news agency of the Iranian judiciary reported on Tuesday.
According to Mizan, the nine IS members were convicted of carrying weapons, clashing with Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces, and assassinating three of them.
It added the convicts had sought to enter Iran and carry out "terrorist" operations in a number of border and central cities before being arrested by the IRGC in a military operation.
The operation, conducted in coordination with Iranian intelligence forces, resulted in the deaths of several IS members and three IRGC personnel, Mizan said, adding Iranian forces seized weapons, ammunition, magazines, a PK machine gun, 50 grenades, and some thermal cameras. ■
