ROME, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Cristian Chivu was appointed as the head coach of Inter Milan, the Serie A powerhouse announced on Monday, days after Simone Inzaghi left for Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

The Nerazzurri has confirmed Inzaghi's departure last week, after the Italian steered Inter to win one Serie A, two Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana titles in four years. In addition, the 49-year-old also led the team to the Champions League final twice in three years.

Born in 1980, Chivu had spent four seasons at Roma before joining Inter in 2007. During his seven-year spell at Inter, the defender won the Scudetto three times, two Coppa Italia titles, two Supercoppa Italiana trophies, the Club World Cup and the 2009/10 Champions League.

Chivu had been coaching the Inter youth academy after retirement and was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side last season when Parma, in danger of being relegated, came calling. He led the team to safety, after picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance.

The Romanian has signed a two-year contract with Inter and will make his debut in the Club World Cup which kicks off in mid-June.
