VILNIUS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Renovation work on a 10-kilometer stretch of road and two bridges along the Lithuania-Poland border will begin this month, Lithuania's state-owned road company Via Lietuva announced on Friday.
The construction is taking place in the Lazdijai District Municipality, covering the route from Kapciamiestis to Kauknoris. The project includes the renovation of bridges spanning the Rivers Nieda and Kalvys. The contract is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
According to the Baltic News Service (BNS), the initiative is part of the broader "Lithuanian-Polish Border Connections" project. Altogether, 22.25 kilometers of road infrastructure are being reconstructed across both countries. The total value of the project is nearly 13 million euros (14.8 million U.S. dollars), with over 10 million euros financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Via Lietuva emphasized that robust, high-quality transport connections between Lithuania and Poland are essential from economic, social, and geopolitical standpoints. The company also noted that modernized border infrastructure enhances security and enables quicker responses to crises or emergencies. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollar) ■
