LONDON, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Millie Bright, vice captain of the England women's national football team, announced Wednesday that she would be unavailable as the squad attempts to defend its European Championship title won in 2022.
Bright, who has earned 88 caps for England and captained the team during the 2023 World Cup, explained her decision in a message on social media, calling it "one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make."
"My pride and ego tell me to go, but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now, I'm not able to give 100 percent mentally or physically," she wrote.
Bright's announcement came one day after England's 2-1 loss to Spain in their final UEFA Nations League group match. The result allowed Spain to advance to the tournament's final four, eliminating England from contention.
The influential central defender also missed Tuesday's match, along with England's 6-0 victory over Belgium on Friday, saying she was not in the appropriate physical or mental state to participate.
"As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my teammates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future, the game and most importantly, the team. It wouldn't be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready to give everything for the badge and country," commented Bright, a key member of the Chelsea women's team that remained unbeaten while winning both the Women's Super League and the FA Cup this season.
Bright's news follows goalkeeper Mary Earps' announcement last week of her retirement from international football. Midfielder Fran Kirby has also confirmed her international retirement due to ongoing fitness issues, ruling her out of the squad for the upcoming Euros. ■
