CAIRO, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone call on Monday to discuss regional developments, with a focus on the Palestinian issue, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

During the conversation, Sisi welcomed France's support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and outlined Egypt's ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, facilitate the exchange of hostages and detainees, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in the enclave.

He also reiterated Egypt's backing for an international peace conference due to be held in New York this month, aimed at reviving negotiations toward the two-state solution.

Sisi stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the only viable path to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

According to the statement, Macron expressed appreciation for Egypt's role in promoting regional security and stability, and voiced support for Cairo's efforts to help end the war in Gaza and address the humanitarian crisis.

The two leaders underscored the importance of continued coordination between Egypt and France on regional issues of mutual concern.
