MANILA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines' debt increased to 16.75 trillion pesos (roughly 300.88 billion U.S. dollars) as of April 2025, 0.41 percent higher than the debt incurred in March, the Philippines' Bureau of Treasury said Tuesday.

According to the bureau, the uptick was minimized by the significant appreciation of the peso, which reduced the effect of additional borrowings in line with the fiscal program.

"The government continues to follow a disciplined debt strategy, ensuring that borrowings support productive investments while keeping fiscal sustainability," the bureau said.

The bureau added that the fiscal deficit has also been steadily narrowing and is on track to drop to about 3.8 percent by 2028.

The bureau said the country's external debt declined to 5.16 trillion pesos (about 92.69 billion dollars) in April, 2.68 percent lower than in March.

The bureau said domestic debt accounted for 69.2 percent of the total debt stock, while the remaining 30.8 percent comprised external obligations.
