TEHRAN, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Iran's atomic chief said on Saturday indirect nuclear negotiations between his country and the United States have witnessed some progress, according to the official news agency IRNA.

President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami made the remarks at a national conference in the northern province of Mazandaran while pointing to the ongoing Omani-facilitated indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on the former's nuclear program and the lifting of the latter's sanctions.

Eslami said, although some progress had been achieved in the indirect negotiations with the United States, some U.S. officials were still speaking of zero uranium enrichment in Iran, describing such remarks as mere rhetoric by the "enemies, aimed at appeasing Israel."

Elaborating on Iran's generation of nuclear electricity, he said the country had a 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant in the southern province of Bushehr, which generated over 7 billion kWh of electricity during the previous Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2025.

Eslami added that the country's atomic power plant capacity would reach 3,000 MW by 2028, stressing that Iran had allocated land for constructing two nuclear power plants in the northern and southern parts of the country.

The AEOI chief stressed that Iran planned to generate 20,000 MW of nuclear electricity by 2041, emphasizing that the radiopharmaceuticals produced by the country were on a par with their foreign counterparts.

Starting in April, Iran and the United States have held five rounds of indirect talks, three in the Omani capital Muscat and two in Rome.

In recent days, U.S. officials have repeatedly demanded that Iran completely cease uranium enrichment, a request firmly rejected by Tehran.
