RIGA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Latvia will establish a drone competency center by autumn this year, Minister of Defense Andris Spruds announced on Wednesday during the Drone Summit 2025 held in Riga.
Enhancing the drone capabilities of the National Armed Forces (NBS) is a top priority for Latvia's defense sector, Spruds emphasized. The new center will promote the broader adoption of unmanned systems within the NBS, foster domestic drone production, and stimulate technological innovation and international cooperation.
The facility will be responsible for developing capabilities across air, land, and sea drones, as well as anti-drone solutions. Its key objectives include ensuring a reliable supply of autonomous systems and components to the NBS in times of crisis, supporting Latvian companies involved in drone production, and promoting collaboration between the defense sector and industry.
In addition, the center will assist the NBS with training, technology testing, and the provision of dedicated drone testing facilities.
Spruds expressed ambitions for the center to evolve into an internationally recognized hub at the European level, attracting experts, representatives, and funding from abroad.
The Drone Summit 2025 also featured an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge drone technologies and innovations from 100 companies across 16 countries. ■
