SUVA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Head of State of Samoa Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II has signed the notice of dissolution of the Legislative Assembly to be effective on June 3.

Tuimalealiifano said in a statement on Wednesday that he had decided to dissolve parliament in accordance with the Samoan Constitution following the request and advice of Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa.

"Due to the cabinet's inability to pass the Appropriation Bill 2025/2026 in its first reading stage in the Legislative Assembly. A question that was determined by the Prime Minister to be a question of confidence in her Cabinet," the statement said.

At the commencement of the dissolution, the Prime Minister and Cabinet continue to have the general direction and control of the executive government of Samoa in a caretaker capacity, until the first Session of the Legislative Assembly following dissolution, according to the statement.

An election has to be called within 90 days in line with the constitution.

Samoa was due to go to the polls in April next year.
