TUNIS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia has repatriated nearly 3,400 undocumented migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa between the beginning of 2025 and early May, National Guard Spokesperson Houcemeddine Jbabli said Thursday.

Two "voluntary return" flights are scheduled on a weekly basis, Jbabli told the state-run Radio Sfax, adding that no illegal border crossings were reported during the first quarter of the year.

The informal migrant camp in the Amra area, about 21 km from Sfax in southeastern Tunisia that houses some 3,000 migrants, is being cleared as part of a nationwide policy to eliminate unauthorized settlements, Jbabli said.

Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is a major departure point for migrants and refugees seeking to reach Europe through dangerous sea crossings.

As part of ongoing efforts to facilitate the return of undocumented migrants to their home countries, Tunisia is carrying out a "voluntary return" program coordinated with the International Organization for Migration.
