KABUL, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Police have discovered illicit drugs and arrested 17 alleged drug smugglers in the southern Afghanistan Kandahar province, provincial police spokesman Assadullah Jamshid said Wednesday.

The contraband, which included 14 kg of opium poppy, 90-gram heroin, 39-gram Hashish, and 317 pieces of stimulant tablets locally known as "tablet K," has been confiscated from the possessions of the alleged drug smugglers over the past three days, the official added.

In the drive against illegal drugs, police have also smashed 3 acres of poppy farms across Kandahar over the period.

In similar operations, the Afghan counter-narcotics police discovered 30 kg of methamphetamine and arrested an alleged drug smuggler in western Herat province recently.

The Afghan interim government has vowed to fight against the cultivation of illegal crops, including poppy, their processing into drugs and drug trafficking, until the once-poppy-growing country gets rid of the drug menace.
