RIGA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Latvia is pushing for a revision of European Union (EU) migration rules as it faces continued pressure from irregular border crossings, Prime Minister Evika Silina said on Tuesday.
She told reporters after a cabinet meeting that Latvia, together with the Baltic states, Italy, Denmark, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland, wants stronger EU return policies and a possible review of international refugee conventions.
Silina said current conventions do not address how to deal with migrants who are not fleeing war but are involved in the instrumentalization of migration.
Latvia has reinforced border surveillance and passed a law targeting the instrumentalization of migration -- a model now being followed by several other European countries, she said. ■
