VIENTIANE, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Inflation in Laos dropped to 8.3 percent in May, down from 11.1 percent in April, according to the latest report from the Lao Statistics Bureau.

The highest price rise was recorded in housing, water, electricity and gas category, which stood at 21.6 percent, according to the report on Tuesday.

This was followed by the medical care and medicines category at 19.8 percent, the household goods category at 16.3 percent, and the education category at 15.5 percent.

The Lao government has intensified efforts to control inflation by adopting more restrictive monetary policies.

The Lao central bank is continuing its efforts to tackle pressing economic and financial challenges, aiming to bring inflation down to single digits by 2025.
