KABUL, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The top six teams from the Afghanistan Wheelchair Basketball National Federation competed in a national tournament held at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) physical rehabilitation center in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Organized by the ICRC, the tournament brought together teams from six provinces - Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Balkh, Faryab, Herat and Kabul - to identify athletes for the national wheelchair basketball team.
"The goal of these competitions is to raise the level of athletes' skills, advocate for people with disabilities, showcase their abilities, and select representatives for the team," said Shukrullah Zeerak, the ICRC's sports program supervisor.
According to Zeerak, top players are selected for the Afghan national wheelchair basketball team once or twice a year to participate in international competitions.
A total of 72 players took part in the four-day tournament. The national team is scheduled to travel to Thailand for the Asia-Pacific Championship in November 2025.
The ICRC currently supports 910 wheelchair basketball players across 14 provinces in Afghanistan, providing training and competitive opportunities as part of its broader physical rehabilitation efforts. ■
