BRUSSELS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The Council of the European Union (EU) on Tuesday adopted an amendment to ease its regulation on carbon dioxide emission standards for new cars and vans, granting manufacturers greater flexibility in meeting their 2025 targets.
Under the revised rules, manufacturers' compliance with emission targets for 2025, 2026 and 2027 will be assessed on a three-year average rather than on an annual basis, according to the Council.
The change comes as European automakers face increasing pressure to decarbonize amid intensifying global competition and the EU's long-term goal of achieving zero-emission road transport by 2050.
The amended regulation will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. ■
