SYDNEY, May 27 (Xinhua) -- An Australian woman has been arrested and charged with murder over the death of a three-year-old girl.

Police in the northeastern state of Queensland said in a statement in the early hours of Tuesday morning that the 32-year-old woman has been charged with one count of murder following the death of the child on Monday afternoon.

The three-year-old girl was found unresponsive and declared deceased at the scene after emergency services were called to a property in Moore Park Beach, 320 km north of Brisbane, at about 4:45 p.m.

Queensland Police Service Chief Inspector Grant Marcus told reporters on Monday night that the woman and child were known to each other.

"I'm not exactly sure at this stage who rang the police, but certainly there were multiple calls coming in relation to what's happened, and police rushed out and unfortunately, have located this child deceased at the residence," he said.

He said that detectives were interviewing neighbors and going through the scene to "try and make some sense of this horrendous tragedy."

Marcus said that there were two other children present at the time who were not injured.
